Obituary for Elizabeth C. Lewis
It has ÂÂbeen said, "rain just means the place you're leaving misses you."
Heavy rains fell on Thursday, August 3rd, 2017 as close relations sped towards New Hampshire in support of Elizabeth Claire (Beth) Lewis, 58, of Merrimack. Though not everyone arrived in time, Beth passed away, after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by family, friends and the knowledge that many more loved ones were rushing to her side from all over the country.
Beth was born December 23, 1958 in Pasadena, Texas, holding a special place as the only daughter among five children of Rose Nani (Agnew) and Donald Kenyon Lewis.
Beth spent the bulk of her youth in Texas until moving to New Hampshire in 1975 and graduating with the Merrimack High School class of 1976. She first attended Austin College in Sherman, Texas, as a legacy student following her brother, Robert Dennis Lewis.
After giving birth to her eldest son in1978, Beth left Austin College and attended various universities incrementally, all the while working full time as a single mother. Two more children and 18 years later, Beth ultimately earned a B.S. summa cum laude in psychology from Granite State College in 2016. Cancer prevented her continuing studies as a graduate student at the University of Texas Permian Basin.
Beth devoted herself as a para professional aide of the Merrimack School District, assisting in the instruction of special needs children. In addition to her work in the special education system, Beth led water aerobics classes and taught scores of local children to swim. Many Merrimack families owe successful summertime beach and pool vacations to the classes Beth taught.
Reaping a lifetime of sowing loving compassion for others, Beth experienced unparalleled support from friends, co-workers and neighbors during the latter stages of her illness, for which her family will always be grateful.
Beth’s beloved mother, Rose Agnew Lewis, and nephew Kenyon Pearce Lewis preceded her in death. Beth is survived by her father, Donald Kenyon Lewis, and wife, Pat, of Forest Park, Georgia; her brother, Mark Steven Lewis, and wife, Susan, of Georgetown, Texas; brother Robert Dennis Lewis of Austin, Texas; brother David Kenyon Lewis of San Marcos, Texas; and brother Glenn Carlton Lewis and wife, Deborah, of Austin, Texas.
She is also survived by her children, Christopher Glenn Lewis (38) of Plano, Texas; Kate Marie Swafford (22) of Merrimack, New Hampshire; Jacob Randall Robert Swafford (19) of Las Cruces, New Mexico; and stepdaughter Jennifer Megan Swafford (26) of Boston, Massachusetts, along with nephews Michael Kenyon Lewis, Bryan Joseph Lewis, Aaron James Lewis, Alec Spencer Lewis and niece Jenna Elizabeth Pinkston, all of Texas.
Not only the beloved mother of three biological children, Beth happily served as a surrogate mother to any and all she came across. Her personal accomplishments aside, the role Beth loved above all was that of mother. A mother to all she encountered and all she encountered loved her for.
The east coast storms of this past August signified not only a place mourning loss, but also the many lives enriched because they encountered Elizabeth Claire Lewis.
Though her flame is extinguished, the light Beth cast will never cease to influence those fortunate enough to feel its illumination.
At Beth's request, no service, memorial or gathering will be held. She also asked that no one wear black. Her favorite color is blue.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in the name of Elizabeth C. Lewis be made to reputable cancer research organizations such as the American Cancer Society; Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure; Breast Cancer Research Foundation, New York, N.Y.; Cancer Survivors' Fund, Missouri City, TX; or your local hospice organization. Other groups Beth supported include Planned Parenthood; Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation, Schererville, IN; the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI); and any legitimate charity support the education of special needs children.
