Alma Lillian Ruth, aged 95, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 5th, surrounded by close family. Born in Brooklyn and raised in the Bronx alongside her three beloved sisters, she married Charles Ruth in 1950; they were happily married for 72 years. Alma was a brilliant auto-didact, studying along with Charles as he completed his post-graduate work; she appeared on Jeopardy, making her family proud with her keen wit and quick answers; she was an indefatigable volunteer, working with the church, with the elderly, and with shut-ins; several times she received Woman of the Year awards for the programs she started. She was a published poet, and wrote poetry daily right up until her death. She was a deeply spiritual person.
Few things made her happier than her four children and their spouses: her six grandchildren and their spouses, and her four great-grandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly and will miss her greatly. She will be remembered for her warmth, intelligence, humor, and joy for life, which she shared with her family and friends every chance she got, always gathering everyone together for special occasions and making even mundane events celebrations.
Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 17, at 11 am at All Saint’s Church in Peterborough.
