Obituary for Phyllis Watts Mazza
Phyllis Janet (Watts) Mazza, 91, of Temple, NH, passed away on January 9, 2017, at CMC Main Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her family by her side. She was born in Wilton, NH, on August 24, 1925, one of 11 children. Her parents were the late William Watts and Ida J. (Weston) Watts. Phyllis was a very energetic person. During WWII she would tap dance with her sister Charlene to entertain the troops at Fort Devens, MA. Phyllis believed in keeping fit, walking 4 miles every day until she was in her mid-80’s. She loved her rose bushes and flower gardens. She was devoted to the youth of Temple and was the town’s longtime Ballot Clerk, for which she was named Citizen of the Year in 2006. Phyllis worked for the Temple Elementary School as the lunch lady. She loved children and cooking. She had also worked at Honeywell and Brookstone in Peterborough, NH, and Hitchiner Manufacturing, of Milford, NH, from where she had retired at age 60. She had the pleasure of meeting President Gerald Ford when he visited Hitchiner. Phyllis was a member of the Temple Congregational Church, the Grange, and was the past Noble Grand of the Rebekahs. She helped with the “Souper Lunches” for many years. Phyllis prepared the “Teacher’s Suppers” to honor local teachers. She was an avid reader, and also enjoyed word search puzzles and crocheting. She loved politics and was thrilled to see Donald Trump get elected. She loved visiting the “old” people, because she thought they might be lonely. She kept her fun-loving personality right to the end and was sharp as a tack. Phyllis loved to travel, especially if it was a trip to see her children and grandchildren, who had relocated. She spent her summers in New Hampshire with her son Tom, and her winters at her son Tom’s place in Cameron, North Carolina. Phyllis is survived by one son, Thomas F. Mazza, of Temple, NH; 3 daughters, Janet Cass and her husband, Harley, of Wilton, NH; Charlene Clough and her husband, Alan, of Lawndale, NC, and Toni Mahoney, of Ft. Payne, Alabama; 7 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren; and 2 siblings, Charlene Giella and William Watts Phyllis was predeceased by her loving husband, Anthony Mazza, and her son in-law, Larry Mahoney.
All are warmly invited to calling hours Saturday, January 21, 2017, from 11:00am to 1:00pm in the Michaud Funeral Home chapel, 32 Maple Street, Wilton, NH, with a celebration of Phyllis’ life beginning at 1:00pm, followed by a graveside service at the Miller Cemetery, in Temple, NH.
