Obituary for Velma H. Hayes
Velma Hazel (Carleton) Hayes, 92, passed away Thursday, December 3, 2020, at Jaffrey Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Jaffrey, NH.
Velma was born in Pepperell, MA on February 28, 1928, to Alwin and Rebecca (Clinton) Carleton. Velma’s mother died when she was two years old. After her father remarried, Velma was raised by her maternal aunt, Rosella (Clinton) Cave and her husband, Francis, whom she adored.
Velma, known to friends and family as Val, attended high school in Hollis, NH, where she met her husband, Harold G. Hayes. After their marriage, Velma and her husband lived in Wyoming for a year where Harold made a living breaking horses. She returned by bus so that her daughter, Rose, could be born in New Hampshire. Harold followed shortly thereafter, and they made their home in Ossippee, NH for many years before retiring to Greenville, NH in 2000.
Velma worked for many years as a hairdresser at the Mountain View Community nursing home in Ossippee. She loved her job and playfully referred to her clients as “blue-hairs”. She also enjoyed crafting, especially quilting, knitting, and crocheting, and her miniature poodles. After Harold’s death, Velma made her home at Jaffrey Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She was beloved by staff and residents for her quick wit and cheerful nature and served as President of the Resident’s Council. She was fondly nicknamed “Queen Velma.”
Velma will be remembered for her amusing idioms, love of banter, and laughing until she cried.
Velma is predeceased by her parents, her aunt and uncle, and her husband, Harold, who died in 2017 after a long battle with cancer. She is also predeceased by her siblings, Vernon H. Carleton, Virginia H. Ricker, and Floyd E. Farnsworth, and her cousins, Dorothy E. Storm, Alberta Doyle, and Robert E. Cave.
Velma is survived by her daughter, Rosella M. Hartwell, and her husband, Dave, her son, William R. Hayes, and his wife, Brenda, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Velma and Harold will be interred at East Cemetery in Hollis, NH at a later date.
