Obituary for John F. Biewener
John F. Biewener of 10 Allds St. Nashua, NH, formerly of Laconia and South Sutton, died peacefully with his family at his side on Saturday, November 19th at the Hunt Community Center. John was born September 5, 1928 in Pittsburgh, PA, son of Fred Biewener and Hope (Selig) Biewener of Lawrence, KS. John was an electrical engineering graduate of Carnegie Institute of Technology (now—Carnegie Mellon University) where he met his wife of 61 years, his darling Sally (Sara Jean Hutchinson), also of Pittsburgh. John began his career working for RCA, raising his family of four children in New Jersey, Ohio and back to New Jersey, where he was Comptroller of the David Sarnoff Labs at RCA in Princeton and then a RCA Marketing Director in New York City. In 1976, John and Sally left RCA and New Jersey to become innkeepers of the New London Inn for two years, long enough to know they weren’t meant to be innkeepers but enough time to fall in love with New Hampshire. Ever appreciative of antiques and history, John and Sally moved to the Johnson Farm house (ca. 1787) in South Sutton. John left inn keeping behind to work as a CPA until retirement. John and Sally became active members of the United Church of Warner, participated in the Sutton Historical Society, and were enthusiastic members of the Mountain Goats Hiking Group, organized through the Appalachian Mountain Club. In honor of their 70th birthdays, John and Sally even backpacked for four days from the Madison Springs hut to the Mizpah Spring hut in the White Mountains, accompanied by family members. Hiking was a natural extension of dog walking for John. While living in South Sutton, he “walked the dingle” next to Blaisdell Lake every day, first with his beloved Brittany, Amos, and later with Amos’ frisky successor, Freddy. Ever curious, John and Sally traveled extensively both nationally and internationally. In the United States, they toured national parks, learning about their histories and geologies. In Europe, they were particularly fond of England, making several trips to both London and the Lakes District. In addition to his business and financial pursuits, John enjoyed drawing and singing. His tenor voice contributed to musicals and choral groups over the years, inspiring his daughters and granddaughters to take delight in song. John enjoyed his numbers, as well as history, and was always ready to help out with community, church or family financial planning matters. John leaves his son, Andrew Biewener, and three daughters, Catherine Browne, Carole Biewener and Judith Biewener; his son-in-law, Tim Sturgeon and daughter-in-law Faye Allen; his daughter’s life partner, Ivor Kaklins; seven grandchildren, Matthew and Eric Biewener, Emily Kaufman, Kelsey and Piper Browne, Ella Hartenian, and Maxine Sturgeon; and his great-granddaughter, June. Those who knew and loved John will always treasure his love and devotion to his beloved wife Sally, his family and friends, and his wit and sense of humor, which lasted to the end. Services in John’s memory will be held on July 8, 2017 at the United Church of Warner in Warner, NH, with burial at the Millwoods Cemetery in South Sutton.
