Obituary for Edward D. Varney
Edward D. Varney, 83 Of Mont Vernon, NH and formerly of Wilton, NH died peacefully at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua, NH surrounded by his loving family on June 8, 2017.



He was born in Pittsburg, NH on November 7, 1933 to the late Arthur L. Varney and Frieda (Bacon) Brown. He attended Pittsburg High School and married his high school sweetheart, Alberta G. (Hall) Varney on November 14, 1953 and prior to her death in 2013, celebrated almost 60 years of marriage.



In 1952, Edward, joined the US Army and was stationed in Fort Devens, MA. After proudly serving his country, he and Alberta moved to Wilton, NH to raise their family. He was employed at Hitchiner Manufacturing Company and later started his own Tool and Die business. For many years he owned Ed’s Cycle Shop in Amherst, NH and later owned and distributed snowmobiles as Northern Distributors. For the last 40 years he owned and operated Cathy’s Place, food concession stands with his son Curt, at several County Fairs in NH & VT and coined the phrase, “Smile if you’re hungry!”.



Edward enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. While raising 6 children, they spent many weekends in their motor home watching his sons race motorcycles. Ed was their sponsor, mechanic, coach and biggest fan. He enjoyed spending time in Pittsburg, NH and loved to hunt and fish. Prior to Alberta’s death, many memories were made at their home in Port Richey, FL. More recently, he enjoyed antiquing and attending auctions. He was a true patriot who loved his country and enjoyed spending time catching up on the latest politics and world affairs.



Edward is pre-deceased by his beloved wife, his parents, his brother, William Fuller, Sr., and his grandson, Scott Varney. He is survived by his children Cynthia Crisp and her boyfriend Chip McConney, Curtis Varney and his girlfriend Gayle Perkins, Carl Varney, Christine Benson, Carol Holt and her fiancé Larry Budreau and Cathleen Varney; his grandchildren, Bridget Willard and her husband Paul, Shauna Dixon and her husband Anthony, April Spooner and her husband Jay, Justin Benson and his wife Amanda, Jocelyn Benson, Brandon Doran, Keegan Holt and his wife Elise, Jillian Benson and her fiancé Malcom Phillips, Kaitlyn Spicknall and her husband Jason, Jayma Brissett and her husband Omar, Sara Howard and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Harold and wife Charlotte. He will be truly missed by his cat Heidi.



His wife Alberta was a 12 year breast cancer survivor. His daughters, Cynthia and Carol have walked all over the country in her honor, in the Susan G. Komen 60 mile Breast Cancer Walks. At his request, in lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation for their walk this year in August in Minneapolis, MN. Donations should be made out to Susan G. Komen 3-Day and mailed to Cynthia Crisp c/o P.O. Box 473, Hollis, NH 03049.


Calling hours will be at the Michaud Funeral Home, 32 Maple Street, Wilton, NH 03086 on Monday June 12, 2017 from 5:00-8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at the 2nd Congregational Church, 25 Gregg Street, Wilton, NH 03086 at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. A graveside service will be held later that day at Hallow Cemetery, Hill Road, Pittsburg, NH at 5:00 pm.
