Obituary for Fernand Bergeron
Fernand P. (Phil) Bergeron, 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 17, 2018, surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Wilton, New Hampshire, on October 15, 1935, to Henry and Annette (Letourneau) Bergeron. He is survived by his wife, Jeannette (Cusson), his son, Michael Philip, his brothers, Gerard and Henry, his sister, Sr. Mary Clare, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Sr. Annette Marie.
Phil graduated from Assumption Preparatory School, days before the historic tornado of 1953. He spent one year attending the University of New Hampshire before entering the Christian Brothers. He received a Master’s degree in Mathematics. He taught math at LaSalle Academy in Providence, RI, and at various other institutions. Among other duties, he also coached basketball teams. He returned to New Hampshire, working as a self-taught computer programmer, designing the highway road marker system in Maine. He retired in 1999 from Lockheed Martin.
After retirement he spent hundreds of hours volunteering his time to manage the computer networks and systems for various non-profit and religious organizations. Always willing to help others in any way that he could, Phil was able to touch many lives.
Over the past 10+ years, he became an accomplished genealogist. After devoting much time to his research, he created the Bergeron Acadian Ancestry Newsletter (BAAN) and Cusson And Fecteau Explorations (CAFE). Enjoyed by many, these newsletters were emailed weekly to over 150 relatives from April, 2016 until his passing.
Besides being an avid sports fan and genealogy enthusiast, he enjoyed playing softball and perfecting the game of horseshoes, becoming a legendary pitcher among local clubs. He competed against some of the best pitchers in the world and was the NHPA Class A champion from 1997-1999, along with achieving other awards. In 1993, he was inducted into the NHPA Hall of Fame. He spent well over 30 years as the statistician, organizer, coordinator, tournament director, and a player for the Riley’s Ringers winter league in Milford and the Gate City Clangers summer league at Greeley Park in Nashua, both of which carry on today.
He will be remembered as a man of endless generosity, patience and kindness and as a loving husband and father.
All are welcome to calling to be held from 6 to 8 pm at the Michaud Funeral Home, 32 Maple Street, Wilton, NH, on Friday, September 21. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the Divine Mercy Parish in Peterborough on Saturday, September 22, at 11 am. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Wilton followed by a reception at the VFW hall in Milford.
